Oral & Dental Health

Pet Dental Care & Preventative Veterinary Oral Healthcare
Oral Disease is the number one health problem diagnosed in dogs and cats
and the oral and dental health of all animals, whether young or old, is
important. Without proper dental care, 80% of dogs and 70% of cats show
signs of Oral Disease by age three according to the American Veterinary
Dental Society (AVDS). Good preventive pet dental care and treatment of
diseased teeth and gums can extend your pet’s life expectancy.
Dental tartar and the accompanying infection are not only painful but
can eventually lead to heart, lung and kidney disease. Should you note
problems with bad breath, broken teeth, discolored teeth, tartar
build-up, reddened gums, drooling, reluctance to eat hard foods, tooth
loss, swallowing food whole or change in chewing habits, bring your cat
or dog in to see us for a complete dental exam.
At Thornton Animal Hospital, we will perform a dental exam during your
pet’s regular annual exam in order to assess the dental health of your
cat or dog. We can show you what you need to do to remove dental plaque
and improve your pet’s overall dental health and we recommend brushing
your pet’s teeth at home on a regular basis, as your pet will allow.
